From Large Corporation to Independent Consultancy

When Jordy began his career in software testing, he took his first steps in a large corporation. That experience offered him invaluable opportunities to learn, grow, and work with a variety of clients across multiple industries.

But after a few years of feeling like a cog in a very large machine, Jordy began to wonder: what would it be like to work in a more personal environment, where his contributions were noticed and his growth felt immediate?

That question eventually led him to spriteCloud, where he now thrives as a software tester. We sat down with Jordy to explore his journey from a large organisation to a boutique consultancy and what he’s discovered along the way.

Learning in a Large Organisation

Jordy is quick to acknowledge the benefits of starting his career in a big company.

“I had a great group of colleagues there: people I started out with and people I learned a lot from. Being in a big organisation also meant I got to see different clients and contexts, which really helped me grow in my early years in this profession.”

However, large organisations come with inherent challenges. With so many consultants reporting to a single manager, feedback and career development could feel slow.

“We had a lot of people under one manager, and that meant I only had a real feedback talk twice a year. For me, that made it harder to get quick input and guidance.”

While Jordy gained exposure and knowledge, he realised that the pace and personal connection he craved were missing.

Why a Boutique Company Felt Right

When spriteCloud reached out, the timing was perfect. Jordy was curious about a role closer to home, but he was also drawn to the idea of experiencing a more personal and people-focused approach to consulting.

From the very first conversation, he noticed the difference.

“The initial contact I received from spriteCloud wasn’t copy-paste: it was personal. That immediately felt different.”

Once he joined, that personal touch continued.

“At spriteCloud, if you walk into the office, at least three people will ask you how you’re doing. It’s just more personal and people-focused here.”

The smaller size also creates shorter lines of communication with both managers and clients.

“My client was pleasantly surprised that my manager reached out to check in. That was a nice surprise, and it shows how involved spriteCloud is.”

Settling In

Jordy was quickly placed on an exciting project: testing the platform responsible for time management across all Action employees, including expansions into new countries.

“Being sent so quickly on a project felt comforting since spriteCloud directly showed their trust in me. This comforting feeling was extended by being directly invited to the company summer event and I was welcomed with open arms.”

Jordy's Passion? Building Sustainable Automation

As his experience grows, Jordy’s focus in test automation has sharpened, with sustainable automation becoming a key area of focus for him.

“If I set up an automation framework and then leave, what happens to it? Will it still be used, or will it just be thrown away? Sustainable automation is about building things that last, sharing knowledge, and making sure tests actually provide value.”

This reflects spriteCloud’s broader approach with clients: setting up a test automation suite is about creating systems clients can rely on, and handing over our setup in ways that are maintainable in the long term is a primary goal for us.

Advice for Testers

Looking back, Jordy sees his move as a natural progression in his career.

“If you’re curious about what it’s like in a smaller company, I’d say: give it a try. You’ll probably find that you feel more connected, both to the people and to your own growth.”

The Difference Every Day

For Jordy, moving from a large corporation to a smaller, dedicated consultancy was about more than just changing jobs—it was about working in an environment where he could communicate directly, be involved in meaningful ways, and connect personally with the people around him.

“For me, it’s the combination: being closer to home and working in a place where you’re not just a number. At spriteCloud, you really feel that difference every day.”
